Network, network, network: Those looking for jobs need to be seen. “Being a SpAd is not a great meritocracy. You need to be networking,” one SpAd said. “I mean you have to be good enough, you have to nail the interview, but you have to get an interview and that comes from who you know. I had been informally lining up a job [in case the minister lost theirs]. I had a coffee twice with a backbencher who I thought might be a member of the government. Everybody needs a lifeboat, don’t they?”
Plenty of SpAds past and present were out on a Tamesis Dock boat on Albert Embankment on the River Thames saying farewell to long-serving Sajid Javid SpAd Salma Shah.
Spotted: The newly appointed chancellor telegram data himself. Javid gave a heartfelt speech about working with Shah for five years, joking: “Advisers advise, ministers decide, Salma overrules.”
Also spotted were: Chief Secretary to the Treasury Rishi Sunak … Tory MPs Victoria Atkins, Chris Philp, Ed Argar … Shah’s fellow SpAds at the Home Office Olivia Robey, James Hedgeland … Health SpAd Jamie Njoku-Goodwin … DWP SpAd Jason Stein … No. 10 SpAD Sheridan Westlake … CCHQ comms chief Caroline Preston … Former FCO SpAds Ed Jones and Tim Smith … Former defense SpAd Laura Round … Former No.10 SpAds Richard ‘Tricky’ Jackson, Dylan Sharpe … Former Cabinet Office SpAd Anita Boateng … Former Home Office SpAd Mo Hussein … David Cameron comms director Craig Oliver … Former Treasury SpAds Sonia Khan, Kane Daniell …
