The Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of the Economy signed an agreement on Friday to strengthen cybersecurity, which includes measures to protect information systems and critical infrastructure.
According to the Interior Ministry, the agreement was ratified by the Secretary of State for Security, Rafael Pérez, and the Secretary of State for Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence, Carme Artigas.
Both departments have thus committed to working together to address new threats from cyberspace, which have increased in number, aggressiveness and frequency in recent years.
Collaboration between the ministries will be channeled through the National Center for the Protection of Critical Infrastructures, the Cybersecurity Coordination Office and the National Cybersecurity Institute ( Incibe ).
10,000 cyber attacks in one year
The Ministry of the Interior highlighted that during 2021 it neutralised more than 10,000 cyberattacks of varying intensity on essential services. In addition, cybercrime has been gaining ground loan data in recent years in the total number of criminal offences committed in Spain, especially internet fraud crimes.
Specifically, cyber scams increased by 60.5% between 2020 and 2021, and now account for 13.94% of all crimes committed in the last year.
The agreement signed on Friday outlines a number of lines of action, including the protection of critical infrastructures and essential services against security incidents. It also includes the design of early detection and warning systems against threats and attacks to which these infrastructures are exposed, as well as the operators that manage them.
In addition, projects will be launched to prevent and anticipate these cyber threats. The agreement also raises the need to initiate information and awareness-raising actions aimed at society, both at companies and citizens. Special attention will be paid to vulnerable environments such as that of minors (family, guardians, educators or health professionals) and the elderly.
