Give your content marketers the autonomy they deserve
The moral of the story: giving content marketers autonomy can have a huge impact on your business.

They can increase reach by publishing content at scale that speaks to your prospects and existing customers at every stage of the buying process. They can drive growth by responding quickly to urgent needs. They can increase engagement by expressing their creativity, and the custom coding experience doesn't limit their ability to scale their output or bring their best ideas to life.

Webflow's mission is to bring development superpowers to everyone.

This includes everyone from individual entrepreneurs building agencies, to Fortune 500 marketing teams delivering services to millions of people, and everyone in between. We plan to do this in a number of ways, but a very important way is by expanding the capabilities of our app ecosystem. That’s why in August 2023 we’re launching a new developer platform to enable our community to build applications that can be used by every Webflow customer.

One of our developer platforms is the Designer API, which provides support for designer extension applications. The Designer API allows developers to interact directly with the Webflow canvas by managing elements, styles, page metadata, and more. These APIs need to be exposed in a secure way while allowing developers to feel the same power as our designers. To turn this idea into reality, we needed to come up with a way to concisely and powerfully allow developers to interact with the internal logic of the front-end architecture - Webflow Designer.

Seamless application integration
In order to ensure that we maintain a secure connection between the client (the third-party developer's application) and the host (the Webflow designer), we need a way for developers to build the application in the IDE of their choice, but with access to Enable it in the permissions designer to all APIs. When considering a front-end SDK, developers typically install it via npm or reference a JavaScript package that exposes various global methods via a CDN. This works great for some use cases, but we want to be able to release new APIs or bug fixes immediately without having to release a new npm package and force developers to install it.
