Safety Tales: Rented iPad
Vladimir Bezmaly | 03.11.2017
As usual on Fridays, Johann gathered his employees to exchange opinions and news.

Karl asked to speak. It was rather strange, since he rarely talked about anything. And this promised an unexpected and very interesting conversation.

- Good afternoon, colleagues! I would like to tell you a story from my vacation.

— You know, I'm crazy. My work never stops, otherwise I just go crazy with boredom. So. I was vacationing at a famous resort, and since I hate "pig" vacations (well, I don't like drinking and eating, lying by the pool), I rented a car to comfortably visit the local attractions. The company that owned the car gave me an iPad as a navigator. Naturally, I immediately made a backup copy from it, having previously set a password, and then decided to poke around with this copy in the evening at the hotel.

Imagine my surprise! I found the password to AppleID there and through the cloud I got access to all iPads of the rental company.

- Wait, but that way you could block all the company's iPads?

— Not only that. I was able to obtain private data of other users who used these iPads to surf the Internet, check their mail, etc.

- But it's a hole! And anyone could have done that?

— Of course! That's why I remembered that even on vacation I am a special service officer. I went to the company and "built" their security service. As a result, they had to rebuild the business process, create an image of a customizable iPad, and now, practically every time, a "clean" device is given out for rent along with the car. Without data from previous users.

- Wait, Karl, when did you return from vacation?

- This week, boss!
