While there was at least one highly publicized venezuela whatsapp data phishing attack against the Gmail client in 2016, Google is actively protecting the millions of users of its email system.
Google's web-based email service Gmail is used by millions of businesses and consumers around the world, making it an attractive target for attacks. At the RSA Conference in San Francisco, Eli Burstein, head of Google's fraud and abuse research team, detailed the many technologies and processes Google uses to protect users and the Gmail service itself from hacking.
Gmail's defenses are based on artificial intelligence systems that use deep learning. Burstein said Google has been continuously improving deep learning over the years, and it now recognizes spam emails with 99.9 percent accuracy.
The deep learning Google uses has both software and hardware components. According to Burstein, Google has built and uses specialized integrated circuits to accelerate the deep learning pipeline, helping Gmail stay ahead of spammers and email-borne threats.
