Excel macros are powerful tools that can automate workflows and simplify complex tasks. However, these useful features also pose significant security risks, especially when they come from unsafe or unknown sources. Cybercriminals often use macros to hide malicious code in Excel files that can be executed upon opening and infect systems.

What risks are posed by uncertain macros?
Macros can automatically execute malware whenever an infected file is opened. The most common threats include:

Ransomware : Encryption of important files followed by a ransom demand.
Data theft : Theft of sensitive information such as passwords or bank details.

How can Excel automatically block macros from the Internet?
To protect against these threats, Microsoft offers a security feature that blocks macros from the internet by default. This prevents potentially dangerous files from being executed without permission.

Activating macro blocking:
Open Excel and click File .
Select Options and navigate to Trust Center .
In the Trust Center, click Trust Center Settings .
Open the Macro Settings area .
Select the Disable macros with notification or Disable macros except signed macros option.
Save settings and restart Excel.
Additionally, recent Microsoft updates automatically block macros in files downloaded from the internet. A corresponding warning informs users.
