Learn some more tips on using commas

I had cheese , bacon , ham , lettuce, cherry tomatoes, and mayonnaise on my sandwich .
The commas in this sentence are extremely important to make it readable, because without them, anyone reading it might think that “ cherry ” and “ tomatoes ” are two different things. The one before “ and ”, however, is a stylistic choice.

Commas also separate items phone number list or combinations of more than one adjective and phrase. Note the structures below:

The small, fluffy, white clouds didn't suggest that it would rain.
I went home , made a snack, and started to eat.
I work at the supermarket, Karen is a lifeguard , and John is an accountant.
I woke up early today, even though I didn't have work.
The last comma is called the “ Oxford comma ” and you may or may not use it depending on the meaning of a particular sentence. In the second sentence, without the Oxford comma , it would read “ I went home, made a snack, sat in front of the television and started to eat. ”
